Image One of the pleasures of the National Stonewall Democrats convention in Pittsburgh was the opportunity to hear and meet Patrick Murphy who is running for the US House of Representatives in Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District.  Patrick is an Iraq War veteran, a former West Point professor and criminal prosecutor, yet he is a clear progressive when it comes to issues supporting marriage equality, stem cell research, and calling for our military to start coming home from Iraq.  Patrick is also supported by the progressive netroots blogs.

Take a look at what's out there about Patrick and then do something about it:

Antoine Thompson Endorsed By Stonewall WNY For State Senate PDF Print E-mail

Stonewall Democrats of WNY endorsed Buffalo councilmember Antoine Thompson for NYS Senate - 60th District over incumbent freshman senator Marc Coppola on Tuesday.  Thompson is by far a more progressive politician than Coppola and he has the history of being proactive on GLBT and progressive issues as a Buffalo councilmember.  Coppola has taken progressive stances and has been in the forefront of govermental reform, especially in his role as Majority Leader of the Buffalo Common Council, but lacks the self-starter energy that Antoine Thompson possesses.  Thompson agressively seeks out progressive stances and issues and as a result is driven by the progressive fire that comes from within himself.  Antoine Thompson will be a great addition to the NYS Senate like such progressive colleagues as Senators Tom Duane and Liz Kreger.

Representation By Women Lags Other Countries PDF Print E-mail

I find it appalling that the United States lags in its representation by women from many other countries, countries that are not even considered as progressive as the US.  But the problem is not only for representation by women -- it is a problem of representation overall: a problem of representation of women, of Hispanics, of African Americans, of GLBT Americans ...  Our task as Americans should be to work towards equitable representation, that our representative bodies look like the communities they represent.  Our task in other countries that have been developing democracies, including Iraq, have included assuring a representative elected body, so why do why lack such representation in our own country?

To me, it would seem that the solution somehow centers around the opportunity for these under-representated communities to work together towards better representation overall.  It may sound like a simple solution, but we have yet to achieve more equitable representation.  So perhaps we can give such an opportunity a chance and work for better representation by working with other under-representated communities for more equitable representation overall.
